That titanium is the most commonly used material in bone surgery?

Due to its high strength, low weight, high corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility, titanium is an ideal application material in medicine - especially in bone surgery. Titanium forms an extremely resistant oxidic protective layer in air, which makes it corrosion resistant in many media. Remarkable is its high strength at a relatively low density.

According to the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), titanium alloys can be characterized in grades 1 to 39, of which grades 1-4 are pure titans of varying degrees of purity. Grade 4 pure titanium is the most commonly used material for dental implants. This type of titanium with increased oxygen content, in combination with cold forming, enables the highest strength values.
