That the delicious cotton candy was invented by a dentist?

In 1897, cotton candy was produced for the first time as we know it today. Two Americans invented the machine that turns hard sugar into soft cotton wool. The idea of dentist William James Morrison and confectioner John Wharton is simple but effective and made the two men rich. To make cotton candy, household sugar is heated and liquefied in the middle of the cotton candy machine. The centrifugal force throws the sugar away from the spinning head through very small holes. On the way from the spinning head, the liquid sugar immediately cools down and the resulting wafer-thin sugar threads are then wound up in the tub with a rod.

The cotton candy owes its name to this cotton-like consistency. By adding food colouring and flavourings, the cotton candy can be coloured and varied in taste.
